Matariki Dawn

  Fri 01 Jun 2018 to Sun 15 Jul 2018
Stardome Observatory Planetarium

In celebration of Matariki, catch the popular Matariki Dawn show – a Stardome production that looks at the cultural and astronomical aspects of Matariki, a group of spectacular stars. Using the planetarium technology, learn more about this important open star cluster and practical astronomy. Fly out to Matariki and learn the Maori names of the seven visible stars, find out why we see Matariki at certain times of the year and why the lunar calendar is important.

The show includes the animated tale of Rangi and Papatuanuku and the story of Rona and the Moon. Sit back and listen to the story of the shadows on the Moon came to be as Marama the Moon captured Rona and held her in punishment for her angry outburst.

An exciting part about the Matariki Dawn screenings this year is the inclusion of the new animation segment “The Great Waka” which tells the story of Tama Rereiti in a visually compelling 360-degree experience.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for shows. Late entry into the planetarium is not possible once the show has started.
