Escape the crowds and head to Matakana Coast Wine Country

A mere 45 minutes from downtown Auckland you will find Matakana Coast with its stunning mix of countryside and coastal landscapes stretching from the historic Bohemian village of Puhoi in the south to beautiful Pakiri Beach in the north. Together with its vineyards, pristine beaches, fine artisan food products, sculpture trails and characterful villages it offers everything you need for an indulgent short break, day’s escape or family holiday.

Stunning sandy beaches are scattered throughout the area offering safe swimming, surfing and fishing.  You can canter on horseback along pristine beaches at Pakiri or native bush tracks in Warkworth,  swing into action on one of the 18 hole golf courses, paddle the Puhoi River, cast a line or walk any of the region’s tracks over hill and farmland. If you prefer the comfort of a tour there are a range of options to suit, from wine to art and gardens.

This flourishing wine region has over 30 vineyards scattered throughout it. All uniquely family owned its wineries have a reputation for quality individual wine making. Cellar doors, many offering fine food, using locally grown produce are easy to find.  In such an inspirational landscape, it’s no surprise that the region has developed into the home of a number of nationally and internationally recognized artists. A path initially forged by the inspirational Morris & James Pottery, there are now many studios and galleries where you can pick up a one-of-a-kind artwork.

Although Matakana Coast is an ideal day-trip destination, it is perfect for longer explorations. The area is well catered for with good accommodation from luxury, award winning lodges to intimate Bed and Breakfasts and a multitude of self-catering options, camping and family motels.
Surely there are enough reasons to be on your way now!
