Off Onewa Rd or Hinemoa you will find Le Roy’s Bush - see native Tui, Kereru & Fantail birds, and tall Kauri and Totara trees. A stones throw away at Hinemoa Street you’ll find local living treasure - Reuben Price a world class NZ Photographer.
Walk the original sugar workers route (30 mins) – down Huka Road into the Chelsea Sugar Heritage Estate Park with its sugar cube sculpture and Chelsea Clay Cottages built for the workers in 1910. Walk past the distinctive pink and blue Sugar refinery and up into the native bush - leading you to Rawene Road and Highbury Corner with its Art Deco buildings
Head back by local bus or walk 2 km down Hinemoa St to our oldest wharf. It’s just 4 kms back to downtown Auckland across the Waitemata - the first great trading channel of the early Maori and European settlers.
Getting There
Pick up a $15 daily Discovery Pass (includes bus, ferry or train) from Queens Wharf, Fullers or Britomart or driver.
Catch the cream and black Birkenhead Bus 973 or 974 opposite Sky Tower. Departs bus stop 7097 every 20 mins 9am – 6pm M-F & 40 mins in the weekend.
