Motutapu Island

Explore Auckland on Motutapu Island, one of the oldest places in the Hauraki Gulf and home to the rare takahe. At more than 160 million years old, the island has lived an exciting life – it was intensively settled by Maori, hosted massive Victorian picnic parties, and was a military base during WWll. Thanks to a successful ecological restoration programme, the island is now host to a wide range of native species including the rare takahe, a flightless bird once thought extinct.
